Two top fives, or A top ten of sorts.

Inspired by high fidelity I am going to start doing Top Ten lists again. I was looking threw my old archived ones and it helped me find a couple classic gems (I've been doing top tens on and off for about 10 years). Listening to those classics has also brought me full swing into a 90's revival mode.

we were looking for a sound

If you listen closely you can start to hear it. In the tom lines of Dutch house its coming. In the simplicity of the filter disco its getting close. Its all around. It is the backlash against huge bass and its wobbling ways.
All spring I talked to my friends at MC-Audio about how house music that sounded like house would be big this summer. Enough people could recognize the skill behind good mixing again. Not everything would have to be a 'song', a candidate for cross over success.
And so it is.
With tracks like Pleasurekraft's Tarantula hitting number one on the beatport top downloads this summer, it becomes apparent that not everything needs a wobbling bass line or an indie vocal to make it a dance floor killer. Giving DJ's their 'tools' back makes for a much more interesting set. Not just an endless drop of chorus into chorus backed with air horns and bass lines that register more in the midrange. With these tools a good DJ can take you on a journey thew high and low points; Use specific picked out vocal tracks to tell a story. In short - get back to their job.
One thing I didn't see coming was the resurgence of Acid. Simple and magical the essence of an acid line is a tone that threw a few tricks of production sounds like a melody, that melts its way up and down the chromatic scale.
It has long been a point of debate, where house music got its start. Was it the Paradise Garage in NYC, or the Warehouse in Chicago (the clear origin of the name if not the sound). But Chicago is undisputedly the home of Acid. Chicago will also be the home of Clearly Good Music's largest party yet. An official Lolla afterparty featuring Digitalism, Skyler Mendoza, Willy Joy, Midnight Conspiracy and CGM's own Just.One.Duran at Lincoln Hall on Sunday August 8th. You can get $15 presale tickets at here or get in for $18 day of.

Dreamers of Dreams

I thought I would get another post up before hitting the road to play at Crisp in Milwaukee tomorrow night. I've never been but their site has me excited. It looks like a real cool spot for sure, and Ill be bringing some laser and fog support for added rave.

I just put all finishing touches on a show July 9th at the Inferno Nightclub. Dante's Dream has a darker feel
to it with Max Ohm and Hypnoassassin both playing the middle of the show, but I'm bringing back Jessica Fortune to close it out with her smooth funky beats to balance out the night. Many of the lucky people that caught Jessica's set at this years Red Party have been asking me when she was coming back. Finally the wait is over.

Also coming up in July, Our buddies Joint Effort, are putting together Dream World of Magic! A heavy hitting bass centric night. With tons of Dubstep, some grime, drum and bass and a few gitch hop tracks for flavor this night should be one for speaker banging. Madison has really been stepping up the out of town talent lately and this show is no exception. With The Bassist coming in
from Portland. AND two ex madisonions coming home for the weekend to play the show. Zeno will be coming in from Denver and D. Jazen (PKA Mokwa) driving up from St. Luis. A bit of local support will be provided by Cutfucker, a great DJ with dubs as hard as his name.

The power of the dub is hard to ignore on todays dancefloors. I like to keep my sets more in the house and electro tempo ranges but theres more and more good wobbly stuff in the 130 tempo range. Heres one I've really been feeling.

Also I like the new devo album

Summer time and the weather is wet

Its been raining for a few days straight at this point, and there just isn't an excuse to not share a few good tunes and pimp some up coming shows. The grey skies always get me into the slow beats, and this time its the new Morcheeba album 'Blood like Lemonade' thats really been hitting home. I enjoy the title track alot, it has a real Leather and Lace feel that I like. But, the whole album is really solid.

Alright, now on to the pimping of shows. After the weekend of fun that was Moldover in early June, I just cant wait for the Jon Margulies at the Cardinal Bar on the 25th. Jon brings a breath of fun to electronic music with his Hobotech project. Fusing bluegrass and house music to make something new and exciting. If your unfamiliar with his blog
Heatercore.net I would highly recommend it. Theres free music in the form of mixes and e.p.'s and his Live 365 project, a quick and always useful tip for Ableton Live every single day!
I'm also really excited about Wildcard Wednesdays at Cardinal lately. Dub Pub has been going off since we started it (the third wednesday of the moth we get irie and rock the du
bstep), but now we have some more full production parties in the works. First up for June 30th, I have brought Slava (DJ S-Sick, of Red Light night fame) on to promote Eastern Bloc Edition. A night of Euro Dance played by an all Eastern Bloc DJ Line up. Expect lots of Ibiza anthems and sexy Russians getting there vodka on. Then on July 9th I have brought on Carl Kee to do a Techno party. Hes got Chris Rusu (madtown local who hit the top 50 on beat port with his productions) and Poor Boy Rich doing Live PA sets and Mr. Kee him self on the ones and twos. Last up I have Jason Tyler (Chi) coming up for his Dance Party OMG tour on July 28th. This one is a bit of an experiment as I had to add a $3 cover, but I hope it doesn't scare people away. This kid is a wizard on the decks
and really adds something to it with his live trumpet playing. H
e was all over hypem earlier this year with EZ2Luv

Last but not least I'm pumped to be playing Bar 415 in Omaha, NE on August 14. A big thanks is owed to Ultimate Downhill Machines for the gig. They really blew it up in Madison last month and have ret
urned the gig favor. Always nice to get an out of town gig, the Omaha kids are up for a real treat, I've been rocking a lot of my own edits lately and Im going to try and have a whole set of them for the kids in Nebraska.

Everything is in bloom

So things are looking good for a fun summer in Madison. Coming up fast is James Amato at the Inferno on Friday April 30th($5 music starts at 10). With opening sets by Max Ohm, Just.One.Duran and myself this is bound to be a night of wide eyes and big bass.
Following that its looking really good for Moldover on my birthday (Friday June 4th, the Inferno) with support by Duke Shin and Nick Nice. It's going to be a birthday present in itself to see the Mojo controller he designed and uses in action.
Because its not your birthday month if you only have one party Ill also be having Jon Margulies (whos doing the sick Ableton tip of the day goodness on his blog) out at the end of June to play his unique Hobotech goodness.
I'm also looking into doing production workshops with both of the artists...
Stay tuned for more info.

Approaching April

After the mayhem that was my March, I have decided to slow it down a little in April. Only Two bigger shows this month to pimp. First up we kick the month off right with Brian Heath Friday April 2nd at Free Disco Friday at the Cardinal bar. Since the Halo show March 19th Fridays at the Cardinal have been getting sweaty, so clear the date and find your dancing shoes.
Then on April 30th CGM and Inferno Nightclub bring you: Dirty Talk, a night of deep bass and hard beats. With Mr. James Amato of Potty Mouth music headlining the show its already a party in a box, but opening sets by Max Ohm, Wyatt Agard and Just.One.Duran make this night one for the books.
If
your not familiar Potty Mouths stuff, check out some of the links below.

Sunday Sunday Sunday

Sunday has and always will be a good day for tunes. Fresh off a weekend of shows, clubs and friends , good music always seems to surface on these days that start well past noon.
First up is a great jam from Pilooski - AAA. Deep and chuggy this is a fantastic edit of Nora Dean's 'Angie La La'. At almost nine and a half minutes of play time, there is a lot of room to get boring but this song stays fresh and all the way threw. A real masterpiece with a good old school vibe.

>

I came across Rollerskate while I was going threw some of Matias Aguayo's stuff getting ready for the show (March 10th Madison, WI). Off his new album Ay Ay Ay, its a sort of indie dance meets minimal sort of thing, its shaker starts as an afterthought and becomes an infectious staple by the end of this gem.

That got me on a Disco tip, but I needed something a little more banging to get in the mood for some of lifes little chores. The Glamour's first major label release was no disappointment. Always good to see some Wisco talent get international play! For my mood the original of Love Burn was hitting me right today, but the whole e.p. has real dance floor potential.

March Madness

Its been forever since we have posted anything. Sorry about that, and hopefully this will light a fire under our asses.
March is shaping up to be a huge month for the CGM crew.
First off the Admiral and Bhip are opening for LMFAO at the Orpheum theater , by far the Larges campus venue, on March 12th. Along side Electric Violinist Dani-Vi, The Dirty Disco Kidz and DJ MeloD this party is going to sell out fast. Get your tickets now Here. I will playing for Willy Joy that same night, so if your looking to escape the college madness, but still get your electro on find us at the Cardinal Bar.
That brings me to the fact that over the last week my month went berserk. To kick start it Ill be opening for Kid Sister in Milwaukee at the Miramar. Then on March 10th CGM and Joint Effort are teaming up to bring Matias Aguayo to the Inferno here in Madison.
Its a bit of a last minute show, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring one of the Kompakt artists to Madison.
Finally we are teaming up with the Pisces Alliance guys to bring Halo Varga to the Cardinal on March 17th. I've been dreaming about booking Halo since Teenage Wasteland. One of my top 5 DJ sets I've been lucky enough to see.
I know its alot for one month, but something has to get us threw the end of winter right?
